Life in the Kitchen

Way back when (in 1985), husband Tom and I started up a little cafe, with a focus on vegetarian foods and recipes made from scratch. Now I'm a grandma too, and The New Deli is flourishing!

I published a cookbook to share with other harried homemakers; "From the Land of Milk and Honey" has favorite recipes plus commentary about my faith. I still develop and share recipes, running that deli daily (with a whole lot of help), doing some organic gardening on the side. It's exciting to find efficient ways to prepare healthy foods--it leaves time left over for living!

I started young, learning a lot about food prep as a busgirl at age 16. By age 17, I was making meals for my husband, learning to stretch my food dollar; within a few years, I'd become a young mother and entrepreneur as well, learning to stretch my time. My cookbook managed to become a finalist in the Cooking, Food & Wine: Natural Foods category of the National Best Books 2007 Awards. My hope now is to continue sharing what I've learned! And, of course, to cook.

Interview with Jennifer Cote

Question: There are so many recipes online... which websites do we turn to?!?

Jen: I would recommend websites written by professionals who have had experience in the food arena. We can find almost anything online, but anything is not necessarily valuable!

Question: What problems do you find with all the recipes floating around?

Jen: I just don't have the time to wade through them all! Many recipes are simply recycled from already existing recipes. But I want a recipe that makes it more healthy, makes it more efficient. I don't want a hundred options, just the best option.

Question: What websites do you consider worthwhile?

Jen: I was excited about the website for 'America's Test Kitchen' (producers of 'Cooks Illustrated' and Cooks Country'). This is a highly reputable source; a well-spring of tried and true, tested recipes. But you need to become a paying member to access all the recipes (other than the latest season's). I would probably pay the price, if I needed more recipes! Sometimes, you "get what you pay for". If it's for free, maybe it's not worth it.

Question: You post your recipes for free though. Are they worth it?

Jen: I had a game plan, to promote my cookbook. It's not just about the recipes. There's some real meaty chunks of scripture in the book that really changed my life. I believe that the more people read about the "real" food in life (the spiritual food), the more blessed they'll be.

So I was hoping to encourage people to check out the cookbook, by posting the free recipes, to get my name out there. Ha... I really don't know if that's working!

"But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved. Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." Hebrews 10:39-40 (NIV)
